Originally developed for car interiors, TPO roofing has become the top choice for commercial and residential flat roofs. Its durability, energy efficiency, and cost-effectiveness make it ideal for property owners looking to extend their building’s lifespan while lowering utility costs.
TPO Roof Installation at Methodist Hospital Specialty and Transplant
Rhino Roofers, a trusted commercial roofing contractor in Texas, was selected for this project due to its reputation for high-quality installations and expertise in energy-efficient roofing solutions.
Located in the Medical Center of San Antonio, Texas, the Methodist Hospital Specialty and Transplant required a roof upgrade that would minimize disruptions to hospital operations while withstanding the extreme South Texas heat, severe hail storms, and winter freezes. The project demanded precision, durability, and energy efficiency.

Transitioning from Built Up Roofing (BUR) to TPO
The original roof was a built-up roof (BUR) system with tar and gravel. It had reached the end of its lifespan, making a modern, energy-efficient TPO system the ideal replacement. Before installation, crews vacuumed off the gravel to prepare the surface.

The new system consists of:
- Flexible DASH Adhesive
- ISO insulation
- CAV-GRIP primer
- TPO membrane with heat-welded seams
This combination ensures a watertight, long-lasting roofing system that enhances energy efficiency.
“We glue the entire system down,” said Rodriguez. “First, we adhere the ISO board, then apply the TPO membrane for a seamless, waterproof system.”
Not all projects require adhered insulation. Some use mechanically fastened ISO boards, where screws secure the insulation instead of adhesive.

For this hospital project, Rhino Roofers selected Flexible DASH Adhesive because the concrete roof decking prevented the use of mechanical fasteners.
“It takes about four hours to set up to where you’re not going to be able to pull that off the roof,” Rodriguez added.

Why Choose TPO Roofing?
TPO, or thermoplastic polyolefin, is a single-ply roofing membrane designed for high reflectivity, durability, and waterproofing.
“TPO withstands water,” said Rodriguez. “It started as a pond liner, so it holds up to pooling water better than many traditional roofing materials. Plus, its white surface reflects heat, cutting energy costs.”

For businesses looking to lower cooling costs, extend roof lifespan, and protect their property, TPO is a proven choice in extreme climates like Texas.

A Smarter Installation Process
Traditional built-up roofs (BUR) required hot asphalt kettles, open flames, and extensive labor. The process was not only time-consuming but also produced strong fumes that could spread into the building—a major concern for hospitals and commercial facilities.
Modern adhered TPO systems eliminate these risks while streamlining the installation process.

“TPO installation follows two main methods: fastening or adhering.” – Gus Velez
With a BBA from Texas A&M Corpus Christi and eight years in construction production management, Velez emphasized that adhered TPO systems also save time and labor.
“Using a two-part polyurethane foam adhesive increases the R-value,” Rodriguez explained. “We apply it in ribbons, allowing it to rise and set before laying in the poly ISO. This process secures the insulation while improving energy efficiency.”
TPO Roofing Factoids
What is a Class 4 Hail Rating?
A Class 4 Hail Rating is the highest impact resistance level for roofing materials under UL 2218 standards. TPO membranes with this rating can withstand hailstones up to two inches in diameter without significant damage. (Source: GAF)
How Energy Efficient is TPO Roofing?
White TPO roofing can reflect up to 79% of solar heat, reducing the strain on air conditioning systems and lowering cooling costs. (Source: Holcim Elevate TPO Technical Information Sheet)
How Durable is TPO Roofing?
TPO membranes can withstand forceful impacts such as falling debris and hail. Some versions pass dynamic puncture tests equivalent to resisting a dropped steel ball from multiple feet in the air. (Source: Holcim Elevate TPO Technical Information Sheet)
